Dorothy LaBrune was born on May 22, 1929 in Lidgerwood, ND. to Adolph and Helen (Kohoutek) Kotchian. Her family moved to a farm near Max, ND when she was a child. Dorothy loved to ride horseback and draw pictures. She attended school and graduated from Minot High School in Minot, ND. After high school she took secretarial courses and worked as a secretary in Minot.
Dorothy met Donald LaBrune at a New Year’s dance and they were married on June 21, 1949. They moved to his farm by Ruthton, MN where they resided until they moved to Holland, MN. She was actively involved in helping on the farm, which included milking cows daily, stacking many stacks of hay, along with numerous different chores. Don and Dorothy enjoyed dancing and cherished playing cards with friends and neighbors.
Dorothy belonged to the Ladies Aid Society at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Woodstock, MN, card clubs and various organizations. She enjoyed baking (was known as the pie lady for many years), doing jigsaw puzzles, reading, playing cards and sewing. She took special interest in sewing quilts for her family, quilt tops for church and donated quilts for people in need. Dorothy was a very kind and caring person and loved spending time with family.
Dorothy moved to Ridge View Estates Senior Living in Pipestone, MN, in 2015. She enjoyed her new extended family there and participated in all she could. In August of 2018, she was diagnosed with cancer. She then lived with her daughters until December 12, when she entered Ava’s Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, for her final journey, where she was comfortable until her death.
Dorothy is survived by five daughters: Barbara Anderson, Sioux Falls, SD, Susan (Dave) Schaff, Maple Grove, MN, Diane Harding, Sioux Falls, SD, Kathy LaBrune (fiancé Wayne), Tyler, MN, and Nancy (Larry) Deutsch, Beardsley, MN and daughter-in-law, Joyce LaBrune, Holland, MN; nine grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren and a special niece, Pam Sedler.
