Harvey was active in both his community and his church.  He was a life-long member of the Chandler Reformed Church, where he taught Sunday School, Catechism and was an elder in the church.  He also volunteered many hours helping build the church in the early 1950's.  He was also a volunteer fireman for 27 years, served on the Chandler Funeral Association board of directors for 14 years, worked with the city on the curb and gutter project in the early 1970's, volunteered his time at the Bible League Thrift Store in Worthington, MN and taught gun safety classes in Chandler for many years.  Harvey also enjoyed hunting, the outdoors and animals, bird watching, was an avid reader and was a handyman who enjoyed fixing things at home, for family and at church.  He even helped build his own home.
