Johanna Vis was born to John C. and Minnie (Vander Meer) Veldhuizen on May 11, 1926 east of Chandler, MN. She attended country schools in Murray County. Upon completion of her education, she worked out on many farms.
On September 19, 1945, she was united in marriage to Frederick J. Vis at the home of her parents. After their marriage she remained with her parents while Fred was in the service.
In October 1946, they started working for the Rust Brothers near Reading, MN for a year before moving to her parents’ farm near Hadley, MN. In 1957, they moved to a farm near Kenneth, MN, and in 1964 they moved to the Vis farm near Chandler, MN. They retired from farming in 1979 and moved to a home in Leota, MN. In 1984 they moved to Loveland, CO, where she enjoyed going out for coffee and shopping with friends. Later they moved to Alexendria, MN in 1994, living there together for fourteen years. Johanna remained in her home for another seven years after Fred’s death in November 2008. She became a resident of Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton, MN in January 2015 and remained there until her passing on July 2, 2018.
Johanna is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Arlis (Vernon) Prins, Leota, MN, Marlene (Clarence) Hettinga, Pella, IA. Diane (Lonny) Siegel, Alexandria, MN; 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren (soon to be 8). She is also survived by her brother, John (Janet) Veldhuizen of Tulare, CA and many nieces and nephews.
Johanna was preceded in death by her parents; husband Fred; 4 brothers: Martin (in infancy) Tony, Henry, and Cornie; 3 sisters, Martha (in infancy), Gertrude, Elizabeth. 6 sisters-in-law; 3 brothers-in-law and a great grandson, James Pierce.
